My Natural Hair Regimen

I spoke briefly on my natural hair regimen in my feature on Black Hair Information, but I wanted to go over it in more detail on my blog.

Hair Products

  • Honey
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Extra virgin coconut oil
  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Aloe Vera gel
  • Clay
  • Baking soda
  • Giovanni Direct leave in
  • Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner
  • Giovanni Smooth as Silk Protein Hair Infusion
  • Giovanni Nutrafix Hair Reconstructor

Wash Day

In an 8oz applicator bottle, mix 3 tablespoons baking soda, 1 oz. aloe vera gel, and fill the rest with water. Wash hair as normal with the baking soda mix. Rinse, and apply Giovanni Smooth as Silk conditioner, leave on hair for at least 3 minutes. Detangle if necessary and rinse. In a bottle, mix equal parts coconut oil and olive oil (you may need to melt the coconut oil in microwave for 10 seconds first). Apply oil mix to hair. Apply Giovanni direct leave-in to hair and seal. I will do 2-strand twists, braids for a braid out, or foam rollers for a roller set.

During the Week

Nine times out of ten, I wear my natural hair stretched. There are two main ways I do this. The first is by doing a foam roller set. The night after I wear my roller set, I low bun my hair and the next day, it is straight. The other method is by doing a braid out, and again, the night after, I low bun my hair to make it straight the next day. Every night, I moisturize, seal, and low bun.

Clay Wash
I do a clay wash when I want to wear a wash n go. The clay wash cleanses my scalp while also encourages my curls to clump. In an 8oz applicator bottle, mix 2oz of clay with 6oz of water. Shake the bottle to make sure it is mixed well. Wash hair as you normally would with the clay wash. Leave on hair for at least 5 min. Rinse and apply coconut and olive oil mix.

Deep Conditioner: I try to deep condition once a month. Since I moisturize and seal every night, I find that I don't need to do it every time I wash.
Deep conditioner mix #1: Mix 2 heaping spoonfuls of Greek yogurt, 3 tablespoons of honey, and 1/8 cup of aloe vera gel. Apply to hair and leave on for 1-2 hours. Rinse, wash and style hair as normal.
Deep conditioner mix #2: Mix 1/8 cup of olive oil with 3 tablespoons of honey. Apply to hair and leave on for 1-2 hours. Rinse, wash and style hair as normal.

I don't cowash often, and cowashing with just conditioner or a cleansing conditioner does not work on my hair and scalp. It leaves buildup and my hair still smells, so I have to add baking soda. I mix Giovanni conditioner, 3 teaspoons of baking soda, aloe vera gel, and olive oil. I wash my hair with the cowash mix and rinse, apply my oil mix, and style.
